Uses for Lavender Oil : The Only Oil You'll Need

uses for lavender oil

Lavender oil is the only essential oil you will ever need because of the many health benefits it offers. It’s an oil that’s extracted from the lavender plant’s flowers primarily via steam distillation. Lavender’s Latin name is Lavare, which means ‘to wash’. This may be due to its particularly pleasant aroma, which is why it has been used for centuries for the purposes of making potpourri and perfumes! Lavender oil is regarded as the most versatile when compared to other essential oils mainly because of its relaxing effects and the therapeutic benefits it has for the skin. It's one of the few oils that can be applied directly to the skin without being diluted("watered down") by either water or a carrier oil like coconut oil.

The following are benefits of lavender oil, they include;

Calming effects

Rubbing a few drops in the palm of your hands then inhaling the scent really calms the mind. Consider rubbing the oil on your feet, wrist, and temples and you will immediately feel a calming effect overwhelming your body! This is because it is an excellent tonic where anxiety and nerves issues are concerned. What happens when you rub or inhale this amazing oil is that it's refreshing aroma is great in reducing restlessness and nervous tension.

When a few drops are placed on the pillow, it helps to induce sleep especially in those people who find it difficult to fall asleep. It has often replaced modern medicine because of the relaxing impact it has on people.

It’s often advised that if you’re outside and are prone to insect bites, applying lavender oil is important since it's smell is a deterrent of flying insects such as moths, mosquitoes and midges. Lavender oil can also be used to reduce the size of insect bites. This versatile oil contains anti-inflammatory properties that help in reducing irritation caused by bug bites.

Where minor burns are concerned, applying two to three drops of lavender essential oil on the burn will help in decreasing pain. Pain from a minor burn, such as a spill from a hot beverage, can be alleviated by applying a few drop of lavender oil directly to the affected area. You'll instantly notice a reduction in swelling and redness.

Lavender oil has such a wonderful scent that just a few drops can be added to homemade deodorant to create an all natural, wonderful smelling, deodorant.

Aromatherapists agree that the lavender is one of the best oils for fighting acne. "It inhibits the bacteria that cause the skin infection, helps to rebalance the over-secretion of sebum, which the bacteria thrive on, and reduce scarring" Add a few drops of lavender oil to a plain cleanser such as CeraVe moisturizing cleanser and apply to face twice daily.

Cuts and Wounds

Apply undiluted lavender essential oil to minor cuts and wounds. The oil acts to relieve pain, prevent infection by warding off harmful bacteria, and aid in healing and skin regeneration. This amazing oil can also help reduce scar formation. If your wound is more than minor contact either your doctor or emergency services.

Sinus infections

Add lavender oil and tyme oil to an almost steaming pot of water and inhale slowly and deeply. The oil mixture will help relieve your sinus symptoms while the steam diffuses the healing oils into your sinus passageways. For added sinus relief, put the hot water/oil mixture in a bowl, place a towel over your head, and cover the bowl with your towel draped head.

A Powerful Antioxidant

Like toxins, chemicals and pollutants, free radicals are dangerous to the body. They increase the risk factor for numerous diseases. Your body creates antioxidant enzymes to fight free radicals. Enzymes such as glutathione, catalase, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) block free radicals from damaging your immune system. Less than stellar diets and bad genetics can lead to low natural antioxidant production.

Thankfully Lavender oil has shown to increase production of the enzymes glutathione, catalase, and superoxide dismutase (SOD).

Treating neurological disorders

Ok, this may seem like a stretch, but research is being done on this wonderful purple plant that could lead to developments in treating depression, mood disorders such as bipolar disorder, and severe anxiety.

Lavender oil performed much better than the placebo for intensive care patients with anxiety over their conditions. It also eased the effects of postpartum depression in new mothers.

Oral administration of lavender enhanced the mood, decreased heart rate, and led to less skin responses in people subjected to anxiety-inducing film clips.

In a work study 90% of respondents that burned lavender oil in the office reported a better work environment.

Cognitive function can be improved by subjecting dementia patients to a range of essential oils twice per day.

Lavender was orally administrated (80 mg/day) for 6 weeks in 50 patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) showed many improvements to their life and general health.
